Abstract:

Scholarly research on graphical adaptations of A Dream of Red Mansions during the Republic of China period has primarily centered on comic book compilations published in collected editions, with minimal attention given to adaptations appearing in newspapers and periodicals. Yet these periodical publications served as crucial vehicles for disseminating A Dream of Red Mansions among urban readers of that era—a significance that cannot be overlooked. This study examines the recently discovered comic strip adaptation of A Dream of Red Mansions illustrated by Li Dinglong in the Yi Shih Pao (Shanghai) in 1948, exploring both the artist's life and works within the historical context. The research analyzes the distinctive artistic qualities of Li Dinglong's illustrations, highlighting his pioneering status as the first modern painter to visit Dunhuang for the purpose of copying mural paintings. Despite meriting recognition in the histories of Dunhuang art, modern fine arts, and painting, Li Dinglong's creative contributions have been largely neglected by academics. This study aims to unfold these historical oversights and reevaluate Li Dinglong's artistic legacy and his significant contributions to visual adaptations of classical literature.
