Abstract:

Taking the digital game Black Myth: Wu Kong as an example, this paper analyzes the transformation of Journey to the West adaptations from "loyalty to the original work" toward a "family resemblance" approach. This shift has catalyzed the expansion of cross-media cultural products within the "Journey to the West Universe" and facilitated the modern transformation of traditional culture. The cross-media adaptation of Black Myth: Wu Kong transcends mere changes in artistic forms and expressive media, evolving in symbolic meanings and cultural concepts while significantly impacting modern individuals' subjective identity. The game reflects contemporary gamers' pursuit of freedom and self-awareness through reinterpretations of characters like "Wukong" and "Bajie." Through meticulously designed audio-visual mythical landscapes, intertwined character images and narrative threads provide players with an immersive imaginary space. This enables individuals to imaginatively reconstruct the "subject-virtual entity" within this virtual world and experience self-realization beyond reality. In the context of the thriving postmodern cultural industry, the intimate connection between subject-constructed myths and media has become an essential bond in social structures.
