Abstract:

Chinese gardens, as exemplars of Eastern spatial aesthetics, have significantly fulfilled the desires of ancient literati for a pursuit of seclusion without the necessity to retreat deep into mountains and forests. This concept has given rise to the underlying theme of “concealment” in the spatial design of gardens. Suzhou garden is the representative of Chinese garden culture, so it is typical to study it as an example. This article proposes the analysis of the perception and experiential aspects of garden space from various levels through the perspective of “semi-concealment”. By examining the architectural forms resulting from “halving” treatment, this article summarizes the spiritual expression through this approach in terms of aesthetics, psychology, and philosophy. In addition, the paper analyzes and discusses the common points between the expression of "semi- concealment " space, traditional Chinese landscape painting and the listed modern and contemporary art, which shows the unique understanding of space in traditional Chinese culture. The aim of the article is to trace our cultural origins within existing artistic frameworks, reevaluate the relationship between objects, scenery and people in gardens, and expand the significance of traditional aesthetics in contemporary art creation.
