Abstract:

The prevalence of antiquity style in the Song Dynasty and the rise of epigraphy pushed the development of bronze wares to another peak in the Song Dynasty. Bronze wares in the Song Dynasty imitated those in the three ancient dynasties—Xia Dynasty, Shang Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty. There existed six ancient bronze drinking vessels named LIU ZUN (six vessels) in the three dynasties. However, these six vessels cataloged in book “Xuanhe Bogu Tu” (Xuanhu Encyclopedic Picture of Ancient Times) account for five, with the only exception of Shan Zun (Shan Drinking Vessel). Xuanhe Shan Zun (Xuanhe Shan Drinking Vessel) appeared after the publication of the new edition of the book “Xuanhe Bogu Tu”, but then Xuanhe Shan Zun did not adopt the belly bottle style of the previous “Sanli Tu” (Three Ritual Picture), nor was it the style of Shan Zun in the three ancient dynasties. Instead, it was modeled on the two artifacts of Shang Zu Wu Zun (Shang Zu Wu Drinking Vessel) and Fu Gui Zun (Fu Gui Drinking Vessel) in “Xuanhe Bogu Tu”. After Song Huizong, the eighth emperor in Song Dynasty, made Xuanhe Shan Zun, Zhu Xi’s book “Shaoxi Prefecture Shi Dian Yi Tu” clearly stipulated the style of the Shan Zun, which was used in the drawing of the Shan Zuncatalog from the Song and Yuan Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Xuanhe Shan Zun Xu is the mother of Song-style Shan Zun redefined after investigation by the Song people, and its descendants have been found in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Pengzhou, Sichuan and other regions.
