Abstract: “Cha He” is a color scheme used in ancient paintings. Yet, it is recorded only in Wang Yi’s Methods of Colorful Painting from Yuan Dynasty, and can not be found in books of painting history, painting methodology, or in painting collections or reviews of Chinese painting. This paper tries to reveal the reason why people tend to pay little attention to “Cha He”, so little that few recordings can be found. Also, this paper intends to explore the origin of “Cha He” through research of color and classification.
