Abstract:

A large number of Shang dynasty bronze artifacts have been unearthed in Hunan, featuring abundant decorative motifs. Among them, tiger imagery stands out as particularly distinctive and closely linked to Chinese historical culture. By reviewing historical documents, archaeological data, and ethnographic materials, we find that the tiger became a primary decorative motif on Hunan’s Shang bronzes. This development results from the intertwined influences of shamanic worship, regional cultural characteristics, and the continuation of cultural “genes.” It highlights a deep interaction between cultural fusion and religious belief. The rich metaphors embodied in the tiger imagery actually reflect and reinforce ethnic identity and cultural confidence. As part of the broader narrative of Chinese civilization, the tiger motif on bronze vessels represents the resilient and courageous spirit of the nation.
