Abstract:

At the beginning of the 21st century, Chinese Western Films experienced a new creative surge following a brief silence in the 1990s. With "Pretty Big Feet" leading as the pioneer, New Western Films builds upon classic Western Films' narrative themes and image aesthetics while achieving innovations in reality, artistry, philosophy and people's character. The Western geographical space naturally connects with ecological issues, which have become a defining feature of New Western Films amid growing ecological crises. These films, characterized by Western Geo-aesthetic qualities, address ecology through three dimensions: in natural ecology, they use Western landscape imagery to examine the root causes of ecological crisis; in social ecology, they explore human coexistence with changing homelands in modern contexts; and in spiritual ecology, they focus on Western peoples' survival narratives amid changing realities. This ecological approach deepens Western films' traditional focus on realistic issues and offers practical ways to address environmental ethics conflicts while promoting ecological civilization thought.
