Abstract:

From the early 20th century to the 1960s, the leading masters of the jing role in Peking Opera — through media such as vinyl records, reel tapes, and cassette tapes — left behind audio documents including record recordings, silent scene recordings, live recordings, and teaching recordings. These documents have recorded the most important historical models for the jing role, revealing its artistic principles, genres, singing and recitation techniques, and script lyrics. This paper focuses on teaching practice and explores the significance of these audio documents in terms of artistic principles, genre characteristics, and singing and recitation skills. It innovatively constructs a research framework of “document comparison - rule extraction - innovative transformation.” By establishing a comparison of multiple version audio materials, it elevates personal performance experience to performance norms that can be analyzed and disseminated, promoting the transformation from oral transmission to measurable teaching models. Based on the concept of “upholding tradition while innovating,” it explores the integration path of traditional vocal styles in modern Peking Opera teaching, thereby providing support for the contemporary continuation and evolution of the jing role art.
