Abstract:

“Red” music serves as a high-quality resource for patriotic education, combining historical depth, emotional warmth, moral elevation, and cultural richness through its profoundly moving lyrics, resonant melodies, and inspiring stories. Through artistic expression, it fulfills educational functions by enhancing knowledge, fostering empathy, and motivating action. From the New Democratic Revolution period to the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Shanghai’s “red” music has evolved—from early adaptations and lyrical reworkings to original, mass-oriented compositions; from classic instrumental and vocal works celebrating heroes and socialist construction to diverse artistic expressions after China’s reform and opening-up; and further to today’s multidimensional dissemination integrating modern technologies such as electronic music, rap, and virtual reality (VR). Throughout this evolution, Shanghai’s “red” music has consistently played a vital role in preserving the revolutionary legacy and promoting the spirit of patriotism. To effectively integrate Shanghai’s “red” music into patriotic education, efforts should focus on consolidating and creatively redeveloping resources, diversifying music-based pedagogical approaches, innovating pathways for dissemination and emotional engagement, and strengthening institutional support mechanisms—thereby enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of patriotic education in the contemporary era.
