Abstract:

The rapid growth of online audiovisual content has exposed the inability of traditional criticism, with its disconnect from contemporary experience, to analyze this dynamic field effectively. This paper argues for establishing an environmental criticism paradigm grounded in an original perspective. This shift aims to overcome the constraints of traditional discourse, which struggles with the fluidity, interactivity, and virtuality of network culture, by expanding the focus to how network properties and environmental interactions systemically reshape content production. Through a tripartite analysis of social fields, media environments, and aesthetic events, the paradigm reveals four features of the new media imagination: spectral multimediality, platform-based connectivity, virtual subjectivity, and ontological heterogeneity. It examines their structural impact on artistic innovation. By advocating for an original standpoint, environmental criticism offers a more effective and targeted framework for engaging with the new realities of online audiovisual development and for illuminating its emerging phenomena and problems.
