“Art for Saving the Nation”: Drama Hong Xuanjiao and the Social Culture of the Isolated Island Period in Shanghai

摘要:

上海“孤岛”时期的文化,是近代以来上海社会文化的重要组成部分。“孤岛”时期的话剧运动,对“孤岛”的社会与文化产生过重要影响,是抗战时期话剧文化不可忽视的组成部分。孤岛话剧包括了改编剧、现实剧和历史剧三大类。中国旅行剧团演出的新编历史剧《洪宣娇》作为“孤岛”末期较有影响的一部话剧,借古喻今,曲折表达团结抗战的主旨,反映了孤岛话剧从业者及观众的基本价值取向。该剧在“中旅”、编剧阿英、导演费穆乃至观众群体都产生了一定影响,从而影响了此后上海话剧的发展。

Abstract:

The culture of Shanghai's "Isolated Island" period represents an important component of modern Shanghai's social culture. The drama movement during this period had significant impact on the society and culture of the Isolated Island, forming an indispensable part of wartime dramatic culture. Island dramas comprised three categories: adapted plays, realistic plays, and historical plays. The historical drama Hong Xuanjiao, performed by the China Travel Drama Troupe, emerged as an influential play in the late Isolated Island period, using historical metaphor to express themes of unity and resistance through indirect means, reflecting the basic value orientations of both drama practitioners and audiences. The play notably influenced China Travel Theatre Company, playwright A Ying, director Fei Mu, and audience groups, thereby affecting Shanghai's subsequent dramatic development.
