Abstract:

Miao ethnic costumes in Longlin Multi-ethnic Autonomous County represent a “cultural text” imbued with new meanings through multicultural interactions, exhibiting complex variations and interpretations through both diachronic accumulation and synchronic convergence. From the cultural perspectives of social psychology of clothing, analyzing the ethnic costumes of Longlin Miao in the context of history and contemporary society, there is the reciprocal relationship between evolving costume appearances and cultural identity expression. Through diachronic inheritance, decorative patterns in Longlin Miao skirts have been preserved and reinforced. In synchronic development, Longlin Miao costumes trend toward practicality while being deeply influenced by a multi-ethnic cultural context, developing distinct local characteristics of rich color embellishment through adaptation, integration, improvement, and cultural permeation. Additionally, the Longlin Miao people continue to develop individual characteristics while maintaining traditional costume appearances. These diverse costume interpretations collectively represent the local Miao people’s active identification with, coordination of, and reshaping of their cultural identity.
