Abstract:

The Eight Banners Painting Records, compiled by Li Fang in the early Republic period, is a historical compilation of paintings by “accomplished painters” from the Qing dynasty’s Banner System. The text constructs an ethnic narrative around Banner artists, their works, and artistic lineages. From emperors and ministers to recluses and notable women, it portrays a collective image of Banner “accomplished painters”, providing theoretical reference for studying Banner people’s artistic achievements during the Qing dynasty. Through its preface, inscriptions, and the included “Notes on Painting from Huijing Studio”, the work demonstrates both traditional art documentation functions and nostalgic writings that addressed the cultural psychology of early Republican-era Banner people and loyalists. Research on the ethnic narrative and nostalgic writings in The Eight Banners Painting Records provides academic foundation for studying Banner people’s painting, revealing how the Banner class’s artistic demands and consumption evolved toward popularization and accessibility.
