Abstract:

WU Changshuo was a cross-century figure from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. His life has been legendary from an obscure grassroot man to a preeminent master of art. His artistic achievements are mainly originated from his unique life experiences. The hardships of life fostered his spirit of perseverance and developed his strong personality, furnished him with sufficient knowledge about the world, and also enabled him to maintain an open-minded state of mind and cherish a longing for a better life in long time’s adversity. He gradually deepened his understanding as to the issue of how to transcend sufferings in the physical world and pursue ideals in his metaphysical sphere. TAO Yuanming is the first approachable figure in terms of historical and cultural existence. In more than one hundred years from the Republic of China to the People's Republic of China, both WU Changshuo and CHEN Yinke and other celebrities regarded TAO Yuanming as the ideological ancestor of embodying the Chinese concept of freedom. It can be seen that the value elements that really inspired Chinese intellectuals to foster their independent personality in the twentieth century did not all originate from Western liberalism, but also from TAO Yuanming’s concept of freedom, which has in reality exerted a more profound and substantial impact upon Chinese intellectuals.
