Abstract:

Jiang Pingjie was first known as a representative of the Cloud School when he was experiencing great changes in the world, and then he joined the government to fight against the Qing Dynasty, and finally retired from the world and chose to live in seclusion. He was proficient in poetry, well-versed in geosciences, and had a wide range of contacts. His friends can be roughly divided into three categories: literary mentors, anti-Qing colleagues, and metaphysical and detached Taoists. He has a wide circle of bosom friends, including learned men Chen Zilong, Xia Yunyi, Jiang Xizhe, Huang Zongxi, famous poets and essayists Mao Qiling, Chen Weisong, Zhu Yizun and famous anti-Qing general Zhang Huangyan. Through the sorting out and analysis of various documents, this article looks into Jiang's relations in his life so as to restore a true, flesh-and-blood historical figure with distinctive personality, and presents a man who pursued glory with unyielding spirit, and without any trace of insinuating himself into the favor of the world. He was doing his duty heart and soul while in office, coming forward in the crisis and staying serene in frustration.
