Abstract:

With the emergence of VR theatrical works such as Typeman, The Tempest, and Searching for Pandora, theater has entered a new developmental phase. While traditional theater establishes a spectator-performance relationship where audiences initiate aesthetic experiences through staged performances, VR theater operating within the virtual-real symbiotic technological framework completely deconstructs the “audience” versus “stage” dichotomy by exploiting the infinite extensibility of virtual environments. Advancements in virtual reality technology have rendered the concept of “becoming” more embodied in VR theater. The application of virtual reality technologies and smart wearable devices—constructing multi-layered experiential spaces, enabling embodied cognition, and utilizing the body as a medium—has deepened understanding of this theatrical form. VR theater establishes a new spectator-performance relationship for the digital age, allowing audiences to fully immerse themselves in the theatrical world as integral participants in the performance process. This interactive experience not only transcends traditional theatrical boundaries but also raises theoretical and practical questions within the framework of virtual and real coexistence in digital media, prompting exploration of theater’s ontological characteristics, spectator-performance paradigms, and perceptual boundaries.
