Abstract:

The International Exhibition of Chinese Art held in London from 1935 to 1936 represents one of the most influential and expansive overseas demonstrations of Chinese artistic heritage. The government strategically leveraged this cultural diplomacy initiative to strengthen Sino-British diplomatic relations, reframe China’s national image during the Sino-Japanese War, and promote the global dissemination of Chinese cultural traditions. This article examines discussions of the three sub-exhibitions in Chinese and British newspapers and periodicals to reconstruct the original historical context, re-evaluates the exhibition’s origin and development through historical print media materials, analyzes the role and impact of each sub-exhibition, and explores the challenges and opportunities the exhibition faced in historical perspective. This analysis provides valuable historical insights for East-West cross-cultural translation in international art exhibitions in the contemporary era.
