Abstract:

The book The Materials of the Artist & their Use in Painting is an important work by Max Doerner, a German painting materials and technique researcher. One hundred years has gone by since it was first published in 1921. Its Chinese version was published in the 1990s and has repeated reprints. It has also played a major role in the research and teaching of domestic oil painting material techniques, and has exerted a certain influence on the theory and practice of oil painting restoration. This article discusses the main contents of the book and the source of its editions, which helps readers to understand the development of research on western painting materials techniques in a certain aspect.
