Abstract:

Youth worship has, to some extent, permeated the development of youth narratives in literary and artistic works, including film creation. However, excessive youth worship has instead led to the "suspension" of youth, moving toward the opposite of youth worship. The logic of this suspended youth narrative lies in, on the one hand, excessive beautification of the youthful period and, on the other hand, excessive stigmatization of the adult world. Youth thus becomes suspended above the temporal dimensions of past and future, resulting in singular and flat expressions of young subjects. Since the new era, Chinese films' youth narratives have attempted to "embed" young groups into social relationships to overcome the predicament of suspended youth narratives. This embedding logic consists of reconciliation between the subjective and objective self, dialogue between fathers and children, and connections between youth groups and broader social and historical contexts, providing pathways for young groups to find their true selves. Regarding youth narratives in Chinese films, this paper argues that we should correctly understand the phenomenon of youth worship and actively guide young groups to find their true selves.
