Abstract:

Twenty-five years ago, the successful construction of the Shanghai Grand Theater is a perfect example showing how outstanding artwork should be part of the construction of cultural buildings in China. Not only has it re-kindled the fine tradition that certain kinds of Chinese constructions often have been built with outstanding murals, but also set up a landmark in the gorgeous transformation process in Shanghai’s contemporary cultural prosperity. All these are attributed to the insightful cultural policies of the Shanghai government, the all-inclusive Shanghai cultural spirit and the selfless contributions by the outstanding over-seas Chinese artists. This article details the process of the creation and installation of the huge mural “The Goddesses of Art” by Ting Shaokuang, thus offering a historic record of the happenings.
