Abstract: Based on the observation and study of the sketch teaching in VCU Art Institute, we find that they pay more attention to the research and exploration of the process, and pay attention to the change in their students’ thoughts. Subject to the particular circumstances of the country, the art academies in China have made certain achievements, but, owing to the fact that we place too great an emphasis on homework, sketching, workbook records and the cultivation of other qualities have been ignored, which needs a high level of attention.KEY WORDS basic courses; sketch courses; lines; light and shade; creation
