The Main Theme of the Image and the Inscription: An Analysis of Li Song's The Skeleton Fantasy Picture

摘要:

《骷髅幻戏图》为南宋李嵩所作纨扇画面,对于其图所指为何,诸家所见不一,计有货郎图、端午辟邪、傀儡戏、生死隐喻四说。从图像层面观之,其图所绘为南宋世俗社会中幻戏与傀儡戏交相并融的演出场景,在构图时采用固定程式以服务于纨扇的商业生产需求,并无过多隐喻。作为题词的书写者,黄公望自身两次入仕却罹遭患厄的人生经历,所入全真教借骷髅以喻勘破人生的宣教方式,同宏观层面的唐宋时期用骷髅、悬丝傀儡喻繁华不久的社会语境形成三重叠合,共同作用于情感活动的轴心位,促成了《醉中天》中人生空幻的语义表达。在这一过程中,作为客体的图像诸要素是主体情感的引发物与共振体。

Abstract:

The Skeleton Fantasy Picture, a silk fan painting by Li Song of the Southern Song Dynasty, has inspired diverse interpretations including views as a peddler’s picture, Dragon Boat Festival exorcism, puppetry, or a metaphor for life and death. From an image-focused perspective, it depicts a performance scene blending illusion and puppetry in Southern Song secular society. The composition employs a standardized formula meeting commercial silk fan production needs, without extensive metaphorical elements. Huang Gongwang, who provided the inscription, experienced misfortune despite twice entering public service. His involvement with the Quanzhen Taoist sect, which used skeleton imagery to conceptualize life, combined with Tang and Song dynasty traditions of using skeletons and hanging puppets as metaphors for society’s ephemeral prosperity, created a layered interpretive framework. These elements converge around core emotional themes, facilitating the expression of life’s emptiness in Drunk in the Sky. Throughout this interpretive process, the image’s objective elements function as both triggers and resonant vessels for subjective emotional responses.
