Abstract:

The Chinese Concessions were urban autonomous regions in which the Western powers obtained land use rights through unequal treaties between China and foreign countries, and managed them through land leasing. They were known as "countries within a country".The Shanghai Concessions were the earliest, largest, longest lasting, most developed, and most influential of all concessions in China. Modern Western art such as painting, performance, and architecture have been fully displayed in the Shanghai Concessions, and the Shanghai Concessions have also regulated their carrier and content to varying degrees through legal means. Among them, some aspects are still worth reflecting on today, especially: the art and legal system of the Shanghai Concessions have a duality, the Western modern art in the Shanghai Concessions has a process of localization, the legal system related to the Shanghai Concession Art has been implemented to a certain extent, and the art and legal system in the Shanghai Concessions have drawbacks.
